The award winning concrete collection Brenta has been presented this year at Architect@work in Zurich and Paris, but also at Maison et Object and Materials & Light in Paris. Dates of 2020 shows will be shortly announced.
Brenta, designed by the Italian firm EMO Design, is the first collection of smart urban furniture made from a custom blend of High Performance Concrete (HPC), with each piece designed to emit light.
The collection includes four types of illuminating bollards (XL, L, M, and S), two wall-mounted luminaires (L and S), two illuminated benches (L and S), and two illuminated planters (L and M). For the XL and L bollards and the L wall-mounted luminaire, a special indirect light optic and reflector system has been designed and engineered.
The LED chips are concealed beneath a small reflector placed directly above them. The shape of this reflector spreads a wide beam of light onto a second white rectangular reflector, which further diffuses the light. Thanks to this optical system, the resulting photometry allows for a spacing between bollards equal to six times their height.
The material used in the collection is called NeriConcrete - a completely new, tailor-made HPC mix. Its high mechanical strength is achieved through the inclusion of polymeric fibers; it is an extremely compact material with minimal porosity, and waterproof due to its low water-to-cement ratio.
The XL illuminating bollard can be equipped with an integrated Wi-Fi antenna, while the L bench can include a wireless smartphone charger.
The Brenta collection has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious German Design Award 2019 in the Lighting category.
